i had the chance to be a counselor in the 2nd columbus chinese christian church youth retreat this year. the theme of the retreat comes from the book of 1 peter: "be holy, for I am holy."

it was amazing to see the passion for God among the youth of our church. i often think to myself that i am completely out of touch with the new young generation at our church, God definitely started to change that this past week. it was nice to be able to share my own experiences to them and encourage them in the way many of my mentors did for me at that age.

a design firm based in taiwan. a couple of young designers from NCKU studied the use of concrete as a common construction material in taiwan and japan and also the lighting, appearances, and features of those concrete forms. those aspects and inspirations were then crafted into their line of designer rings.

i think i am going to buy one.

finally received my portfolios in the mail. one goes to the knowlton school of architecture, one goes to the yale school of architecture, and one is for me. sigh. almost done. almost done.

my most favorite and most inspiring architecture project. it proposes a playful and simplistic manner in which to approach life. love it. incredibly amazed and enamored by japanese architecture at the moment.

today was a good day. why?

1) john mcmorrough, the section head of architecture at knowlton / ph.d in architecture from harvard, offered to write me a recommendation letter to the yale school of architecture after a review of my graduate portfolio.

2) received a $0.50 raise at my job as a graphic designer for the ohio state university institute for materials research after 18 months of "excellent" service.

3) received christmas presents from my bosses at work. some home baked goods, $15 gift card to best buy, $15 gift card to buffalo wild wings, and $10 gift card to mcdonald's. thanks layla, angie, and steve!

4) dinner at the olive garden with bryant wu, james wu, and neil jindal. an amazing time catching up with everyone and reliving past memories.

this monster of a hamburger is called a thurman burger. they have an even monstrous one called the thurmanator. with would be two of these stacked atop each other. that will be our challenge next quarter: to finish a thurmanator.

she passed away tonight, the principle of dublin scioto high school and a supportive educator. a caring, sweet, and intelligent person. i remember the first time she came in to my architecture class in high school to see my projects at the request of mr. burns. she was very energetic and full of encouragement. throughout the years, she always made the time to come visit our class and see our work. she fully supported our interest in architecture with state of the art technology, computer programs, and utilities. infinitely creating opportunities to ready us for college. may you rest in peace, mrs. davis.

finally, after 6 weeks, roughly 3.5 weeks overdue, i am free of the stitches to my heel. much thanks to stephanie's tweezers, craft scissors, and medical school experience. next step, the volleyball courts!

amazingly, throughout four years of studio, we've always been placed in the same studio. all the way from daskalov, denison, esquivel, chi, hsieh, and now kelleher. with the end of the year approaching much faster than i had ever expected, many of my studio mates will be dispersed all around the country, at different universities and firms. strangely enough, i do feel a strong sense of attachment and safety in the company of my studio mates, late nights for projects, dinners at yao's chinese bistro, spending sprees at utrecht and blicks art stores at the end of the quarter, and those random trips to the emergency room from exacto blade accidents.

time is passing much faster than i intended.
